We are releasing a new feature on HDX, Tabular Data Endpoints (TDE), which provides API access to tabular data shared on the platform. As of May 2026, there are over 1,500 datasets available, making it easier to integrate HDX data into tools and systems.

For organizations sharing data on HDX, TDE enables tabular data to be made available through a stable API without needing to build or maintain separate API infrastructure. Dataset resources become accessible as a queryable endpoint, in addition to a downloadable file. For data users, TDE allows you to query the data directly, filtering to the rows and columns you need.

Datasets on HDX with TDE enabled display an API button to the left of the Download button on the dataset page. When you click on the API button, a popup will appear with information on how to access the data. Please note that you will need an HDX API token to use TDE. We have guidance in our documentation on how to create an HDX API token.

Thank you to the World Food Programme, UN Human Settlements Programmes, PortWatch, and others for being early adopters of this new feature. Ten organizations now have TDE enabled on HDX, with more to come. These organizations were selected based on the  suitability of their data for TDE, including data shared in CSV format with stable schemas, clean tabular structures, recent update activity, and active pipeline maintenance. We recently enabled TDE on suspected and confirmed Ebola cases and deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, improving access to time-critical data from a fast-evolving crisis.

If you publish data through HDX and would like your datasets considered for TDE, get in touch. We can either enable TDE directly or work with you on any adjustments needed to make your data suitable. This feature will soon include the ability to add a data dictionary to tabular data in TDE. This will give each column a human-readable label, data type and description, so users can contextually understand what the data contains and how to interpret it.
